Charlotte's Web is a classic book for 3rd graders to read and it is very humerus so 3rd graders love it
Last week, my mom revealed that when she was in third grade, in France, she read the exact same book just in french!
I thought that was very funny, so I asked her if she could lend the book to me so that I could share it with the class. Unfortunately, she told me that her book was at her mom/my grandma's house. Luckily last Wednesday we went to France I actually went too my grandma's house and to my delight, my cousin Felicie was there and my grandma had given it to her. Because Felicie is so nice and likes to make people happy, she gave it to me!

ReplyDelete"Charlotte's Web" has to be one of my favourite family stories. I ahve the book as well as two DVD versions of the story. Perhaps it's part of the reason I am interested in spiders in real life.
While I was teaching, I did have a couple books in another language. They were stories in the Maori language of New Zealand. I still have a book entitled 'te Rangatahi 1". It's the first book in an adult Maori language course.
Maoris are part of the Polynesian nations including Hawaii. When I was in Hawaii some time back, I was fascinated by how so many words were similar to New Zealand Maori words despite how far apart the people are.
French, I can slowly translate French to English because I know some basics but I would need an English/French dictionary to help if the book was at adult level. Of course, I could always ask one of my sister-in-laws. She is French while the other is Swedish.
Keep learning. It's a journey that never stops if you have an active mind.

Charlotte's Web has been one of my favorite books too! I think that it is great that books are translated into different languages because then you could compare the same book with people all around the world. My cousin's nanny, Erika said she would try to find it in spanish and then we could compare ours!
When I arrived in America, two years ago, it was super easy for me to learn english because french is very similar to english!

ReplyDeleteIl est peu étonnant que le français et l'anglais ont des similitudes.
It dates back to 1066 when William the Conqueror defeated an English king (there were many back then) then slowly took control of all the English kingdoms. French words became part of English. English itself has, I think, origins in Germany where it was a dialect.
Isn't it amazing how languages evolve over time by taking words from other languages and creatng their own? We use many words that didn't exist when I was your age.

ReplyDeleteI have read Charlotte's Web and very much enjoyed it. I have also seen the movie, which was just as good. I did not know that they had Charlotte's Web in french. When my parents went to Italy, they saw a copy of the Cat in the Hat in Italian. It is very common to have the same book in different languages.
What other books have you read in third grade? Do you know if there is another copy of Charlotte's Web in a different language?
